The Boston Red Sox continue their search for a first baseman after Triston Casas’ injury and Rafael Devers refuses to move across the diamond.
It’s a tough situation for the Red Sox to be in, but one they must try to work their way out of as the middle of the season fast approaches.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today believes Boston could be a good fit for Rhys Hoskins if the Milwaukee Brewers move on from him in July.
“If the Boston Red Sox are still looking for a first baseman at the trade deadline, Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers could be the perfect fit,” wrote Nightengale. “Hoskins, a free agent after the season, will be available if the Brewers aren’t in the playoff hunt.”
Entering Sunday, Hoskins was hitting .285 with five home runs and 24 RBI for the Brewers. He’s recorded 39 hits through his first 137 at-bats with an OPS+ of 133. The 32-year-old first baseman appears to have figured out after hitting just .214 in 449 at-bats last season in a major down year.
If the Red Sox were to acquire Hoskins, they would be responsible for the remainder of the $18 million he’s owed this season. That would put Boston on the hook for slightly less than half, approximately $7.5-$8 million.
Hoskins to the Brewers makes a lot of sense as it provides them with a strong replacement for Casas for the remainder of the season, and it allows them to easily move on from Hoskins at the end of the year if they choose. The Red Sox could also choose to extend Hoskins and shop Casas in the offseason.
