Former National Football League (NFL) wide receiver Antonio Brown was briefly detained by Miami police early Saturday morning following an altercation involving gunfire outside a celebrity boxing event hosted by popular streamer Adin Ross.

In an email response to Newsweek, Miami Police Department Officer Kiara Delva confirmed the nature of the incident: “Upon arrival, officers discovered that an event had been taking place at the location. They initiated an investigation, which included canvassing the area and interviewing several individuals. No arrests were made, and no injured persons were located in connection with the call.”

Why It Matters

This latest incident adds to Brown’s extensive history of legal troubles and controversies since his NFL career ended dramatically in 2021.

Brown hasn’t played in the NFL since he removed his shoulder pads and jersey during Week 17 of that season, when he was seen running across the field and endzone while leaping in the air as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the New York Jets. At the time, Brown accused then-head coach Bruce Arians and the team of forcing him to play through a significant ankle injury, which the team has denied.

The former star receiver has also faced multiple legal issues, including a 2020 battery case involving a moving-truck driver that resulted in two years of probation.

Brown faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct, leading to an eight-game NFL suspension in 2020 for multiple violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.

In 2022, an arrest warrant was issued for Brown in Florida on a misdemeanor battery charge related to alleged domestic violence. While the warrant was issued, the State Attorney’s Office later decided not to file charges against Brown following a review of the evidence.

What To Know

Police confirmed to Newsweek that they responded to the incident at NE 2nd Avenue and 67th Street in Miami after receiving an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot-detection system, at approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Some social media videos show Brown in a physical altercation with multiple people at the boxing event. In one video, Brown appears to be holding a black pistol while pursuing someone, with gunshots audible off-camera shortly after. Additional footage shows Brown being escorted from the venue by police with his hands behind his back.

Brown was one of the top receivers during his NFL career, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He twice led the league in receiving yards during his tenure with Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2018.

What People Are Saying

Antonio Brown wrote on X, formerly Twitter, following the incident: “Regarding the boxing event that happened last night. I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”

He added: “I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me. I will keep you all posted step-by-step on the process. Thank you for the support and love.”

Officer Kiara Delva of the Miami Police Department: “The investigation continues,” noting that she “could not confirm the names of anyone involved.”

What Happens Next

Miami police have stated that the investigation is ongoing. As no arrests have been made, authorities will likely continue reviewing evidence, including the widely circulated videos and potential surveillance footage from the venue.

Since leaving the NFL, Brown has focused mainly on a rap music career, releasing the album “Paradigm” in April 2022.
