Jhonattan Vegas’ PGA Championship Lead Vanishes after Wobbly Saturday Start

The leaderboard at the PGA Championship is tightening up on moving day at Quail Hollow as some of the biggest names in golf start to get into the mix.

For two days, they were all trying to catch Jhonattan Vegas at the top of the leaderboard. The Venezuelan carded a 7-under 64 on day one to take the lead and was still clinging onto a two-shot lead after a round of 70 on Friday.

The lead could have been much bigger at the halfway point if it weren’t for a crippling double bogey on No. 18.

Vegas wasn’t able to recover from that late wobble even after having a night to sleep on it. He started his third round on Saturday afternoon with back-to-back bogeys on the first two holes, dropping into what was a tie for the lead at the time.

Now, the rest of the field is starting to catch up with the story of the tournament through two days. Si Woo Kim, off the back of a round of 64 on Friday and sinking the longest Ace in PGA Tour history, is still hot and has vaulted into the lead at 7-under par.

Meanwhile, the stars of the sport have begun to look the part as the business end of the tournament gets going. Both Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau have moved within one shot of Kim after strong starts on Saturday.

Vegas has steadied himself after the round start and still has time to get back into the top spot. He made a trio of solid pars on Nos. 3, 4 and 5 and is still just one shot off the lead at 6-under, so it appears the jitters may finally be out of the system.

If he can rediscover that form from the first two days, Vegas’ dreams of lifting the Wanamaker are still alive. However, he is clinging on now as Saturday rolls on after a dominant showing over the first 36 holes.
