The WNBA opens up its season Friday night as the Los Angeles Sparks visit the Golden State Valkyries at Chase Center in San Francisco. This will be the regular-season debut for the expansion Valkyries, in addition to being the first game for superstar Kelsey Plum in a Sparks uniform.

The Valkyries are the league’s newest team and will be able to ride the momentum of what is a fantastic home basketball market in Golden State. They are led by veterans Tiffany Hayes and Kayla Thornton, and supported by promising young talents like Kate Martin and Juste Jocyte. Belgian guard Julie Vanloo’s outside shooting could be a key weapon, while Hayes brings both experience and scoring punch to the backcourt.
For Los Angeles, the offseason acquisition of Kelsey Plum is the big news. Plum is a 30-year-old two-time WNBA Champion, coming over from the Las Vegas Aces, where she made the All-Star team the last three seasons. Plum joins a revamped Sparks squad that features All-Star Dearica Hamby and breakout candidate Rickea Jackson. The Sparks won’t quite be at full strength as they’ll be without defensive anchor Cameron Brink, who is still recovering from a knee injury.
