Summary

  • Nissan unveils a special edition 8-bit livery for the Tokyo E-Prix, designed by Japanese illustrator Kentaro Yoshida
  • The livery reimagines Nissan’s Sakura theme in retro arcade style, inspired by the new NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo game
  • Tens of thousands of fans have played the game, and now the design makes its real-world debut at Nissan’s home race

The Nissan Formula E Team has unveiled a striking special edition livery for the Tokyo E-Prix, created in collaboration with Japanese illustrator Kentaro Yoshida. Debuting at the team’s home race this weekend, the livery transforms Nissan’s signature Sakura theme into an 8-bit visual style inspired by retro arcade games and Tokyo’s electric streets.

Notably, the launch follows this week’s debut of NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo, an old-school arcade game also designed by Yoshida. With thousands of fans — including Nissan Formula E drivers Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato — competing for high scores, the digital experience has now evolved into a real-world moment.

Speaking exclusively with Hypebeast, Yoshida shared, “The reaction to the NISMO Tokyo Racer game drop this week has been cool to watch, and thousands of fans have been playing. What really excited me about this project with Nissan was the opportunity to then bring my designs into the real world and have a visual impact on the track.”

He added, “Tokyo is my home E-Prix, it’s an event close to my heart, so to see my work feature on the car is an honour. Japanese racing culture is so unique and I’m proud the team trusted me to take their iconic Sakura theme and reimagine it in 8-bit style.”

The limited-run livery will be on full display as Nissan takes to the track May 17–18 at the Tokyo E-Prix, celebrating homegrown creativity with a nod to Japan’s beloved gaming heritage.
