Summary

  • South Korean artist Jang Koal will present her solo exhibition, Solitary Inn, at Nanzuka Underground from May 16 through June 21.
  • The showcase will debut 15 new paintings, staged as “rooms,” that explore introspective moments of the everyday.

For Seoul-based artist Jang Koal, a window is a portal into something close to magic. Much of her work takes cues from views from her studio – cityscapes and bursts of greenery below, pulsing with shifting emotions, rich narratives and flecks of hope.

In Solitary Inn, her upcoming solo showcase at Nanzuka Underground, the painter invites viewers into her inner worlds. The exhibition features 15 new works that explore quiet, introspective moments that welcome the memory to the forefront.

Staged in a series of room-like vignettes, each painting is an intimate encounter. We catch a glimpse of Jang’s femme figures caught between reverie and reality: languidly laying on couches, peeking into glass fishtanks, gazing out of car backseats or simply standing through the frame of a keyhole. Complimenting the compositions, each work is completed in a dreamy wash of colors that recall a tender past while evoking the mystique of a coming moment.

“Solitary Inn is an imaginary inn,” Jang explains. “It does not wait for anyone to visit. Instead, each room is a space for an individual. Here, fragments of life, unforgettable hope and faint remnants of memories quietly reside.”

The exhibition will open on May 16 and remain on view through June 21.
