Playoff hockey is a different beast, and for the Jets, this series is demonstrating why. Although they were the NHL’s top defensive team during the regular season (allowing 190 goals), they have looked rather pedestrian against the Stars, especially in Game 3, where they allowed five goals. The turning point was in the third period with the score tied 2-2, when Alexander Petrovic and Mikko Rantanen scored within 50 seconds of each other to give the Stars a commanding advantage.
For many teams, the games are won and lost on the power play, and in Game 3, that’s where the Jets fell flat. They went just 1-for-2 on the penalty kill and 0-for-4 on the power play, unable to take advantage in what was a close game until the third period. Connor Hellebuyck stopped just 21 of 26 shots for the game (80.8% save percentage), representing the fifth-worst playoff game of his career. Just this postseason, he has recorded five of his six worst playoff games in terms of save percentage.
