HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Police said they have reason to believe a deadly shooting in Downtown Huntsville on Monday was accidental.

The Huntsville Police Department told News 19 that a call regarding a shooting came in just after 12:30 p.m. on May 12. News 19 arrived first at the scene of the shooting on the corner of Clinton Avenue and Spragins Street.

“At 12:39, we received a shots fired call or a shooting in progress at the 100 block of Jefferson Street,” said Chris Jackson. “On our arrival, we located a red sedan that was occupied with four subjects. One had a gunshot wound.

HPD said a man was shot inside a vehicle. A woman and two children were also in the vehicle, however, they were unharmed.

HEMSI said the man was taken to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

The woman and kids were questioned by investigators.

“The subject was taken out of the vehicle and immediately transported to Huntsville Hospital,” he said. “The other occupants have been detained for the purposes of investigation, have been taken to not only C.I.D. But also the Children’s Advocacy Center for interviews.”

Based on interviews and evidence recovered at the scene, they had reason to believe the shooting was accidental.

“Crime Scene investigators recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting,” HPD said. “Based on interviews and evidence collected at the scene, HPD’s Major Crimes Unit has reason to believe the shooting was accidental.”

HPD said this is all that is available at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. There are no charges at this time.
