Rory McIlroy Drops PGA Championship Warning amid Truist Finish

The PGA Tour was in Philadelphia this week for the Truist Championship (formerly Wells Fargo). Rory McIlroy was the defending champion when this tournament was played at Quail Hollow last year.

With the that venue set to host the PGA Championship next week, the Truist was moved to the Philadelphia Cricket Club – Wissahickon Course.

Austrian pro Sepp Straka won his second PGA Tour event of the season, outlasting Shane Lowry and Justin Thomas to win by two strokes at 16-under par.

Even though McIlroy was never truly in contention on Sunday, the Northern Irishman played extremely well. He signed for a 2-under 68 on Sunday to finish tied for seventh at 10-under par.

Despite another top-10 finish, McIlroy’s assessment of his play ought to worry his competitors for the PGA Championship.

“I think I’m in a good place,” McIlroy said after his round.

“I didn’t feel like I played all that well this week, I still finished seventh. Even my — what I feel is my bad golf, I’m still there or thereabouts.”

If he does not consider his performance very good this week, what will he do at Quail Hollow next week.

That is a venue where the 5-time major champion has won four times. He is arguably the best player in the world on that course, and will enter playing phenomenal golf.

“A couple little improvements and little tweaks, especially going to a place I love like Quail Hollow, and I feel like I’m in a really good spot,” he said.

McIlroy finally got the monkey off of his back, winning the Masters last month. That win snapped an 11-year major drought, and also clinched the career Grand Slam.

But with the Open Championship in August being played in his home country of Northern Ireland, some believe the true ‘slam,’ winning all four majors in the same year, may be attainable.

The closest to ever achieve that was Tiger Woods. He completed what is known as the ‘Tiger Slam.’ He held all four major titles at the same time, but over the course of two years (2000-2001).

But winning the PGA Championship will be no easy feat, regardless of where it is.

Scottie Scheffler just smashed PGA Tour records to win last week. Bryson DeChambeau has been playing great as of late, and finally won his first LIV Golf event of the year.

The PGA Championship is known for having arguably the deepest field in all of golf. So, it will be a tough challenge.

But with McIlroy’s game being so on-point, expect him to be there come Sunday.
