DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The 12th Annual Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation Dragon Boat Race & Festival will take place on Saturday, May 10.
The annual boat race & festival will take place at the Point Mallard Aquatic Center Beach in Decatur.
Since its creation, the Dragon Boat Race & Festival has raised over $1 million to supportDecatur Morgan Hospital’s programs and services, ensuring that healthcare remainsaccessible to everyone.
Participants will race in 46-foot-long Asian-style dragon boats, with each teamconsisting of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a professionally trained steersperson provided by theevent coordinators.
According to officials, the event draws approximately 50 teams and over 1,200 paddlers annually, as they compete for the title of Grand Champion.
Off the water, teams can engage in a fundraising competition to raise the most pledges in support of Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation’s mission.
Each team will participate in an on-water practice session with a trained coach during the weekleading up to race day.
On race day, teams are guaranteed at least two heats as they paddle toward victory. The team registration fee is $1,500, and all proceeds benefit Decatur Morgan
Here are a few facts about the event that all participants should know:
- All ages and skill levels are welcome to join this ultimate teamwork experience and help raise funds for Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation’s important mission.
- Every paddler who raises at least $100 or team who reaches their $2,500 goal receives an event t-shirt.
- Leading up to the race, paddlers raise donations among friends and family. Each team sets a goal of raising $2,500, with an award given to the team who raises the most money.
- Team Captains should encourage giving for collecting and turning in all donations, with checks made out to Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation.
