For the first time in modern Olympic history, the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony will be hosted by two stadiums at the same time.

The ceremony will be split between Exposition Park’s Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The official announcement means the Coliseum will host the Olympic Games for a record third time. It opened in 1923 and hosted the Opening Ceremony for the 1932 and 1984 Summer Games.

The Coliseum will host the Closing Ceremony on its own.

“For over a century, the Coliseum has been a landmark host to some of the most iconic moments in all of sports history,” said L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. “That story continues in 2028 as our City and our region welcomes the world for what will be the greatest Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Meanwhile, SoFi Stadium — which will be referred to as the Stadium in Inglewood during the Games — will be playing host to its first-ever Olympics in 2028. The stadium opened in September 2020 and hosts the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

SoFi will also host swimming events for the Games.

“As a proud LA28 Venue City, the City of Inglewood is honored to play such a pivotal role in the 2028 Games,” said Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. of Inglewood. “Our stadium is one of the most impressive in the world and will deliver an incredible experience for thousands of in-person fans, with millions more watching from home, as we come together to celebrate the Opening Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

It’ll mark the first time that the Opening Ceremony will be split between two venues. The format is not yet clear.
