Washington, D.C. | $399,999

A unit in a 2015 condominium building

This one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit is in a building a few blocks from Meridian Hill Park and from a bustling stretch of 14th Street NW, home to a combined bookstore and coffee shop, a French bakery and a number of bars. The U Street Corridor is 15 minutes away on foot, as are the shops and restaurants along Columbia Road in Adams-Morgan. Three grocery stores are within walking distance, as is Howard University.

The National Zoo is two miles away, and the nearest Metro station is Columbia Heights, 10 minutes away on foot. By bus, Dupont Circle is 20 minutes away.

Size: 490 square feet

Price per square foot: $816

Indoors: This unit’s front door opens to the main living area, with the kitchen directly adjacent to the entry. The kitchen has a mix of cabinets and open shelving, and appliances include a range with an electric cooktop and a built-in microwave. The breakfast bar, which divides the kitchen from the dining and sitting areas, holds the sink and space for three bar stools.

Wide-plank floors continue into the living room, with space for a dining table near the kitchen and a sitting area at the far end. This part of the unit is bright, with white walls and glass doors that open to the balcony.

The bedroom is directly off the living area, with a closet and a side-facing window that has a view of trees on the neighboring property. The bedroom is big enough for a queen-size bed and a set of night stands. The bathroom, also off the living area, has a combined tub and shower lined with white subway tile, plus a closet that holds a stacked washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: The balcony off the living room is long, with space for a cafe table and chairs and a collection of potted plants. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, with nearby lots offering parking spots for a monthly fee.

Taxes: $2,892 (estimated), plus a $253 monthly homeowner’s association fee

Saint Charles, Mo. | $399,000

A two-story house built in 1894 and recently restored, on 0.2 acres

This four-bedroom, three-bathroom house is on a tree-lined street in the Frenchtown neighborhood, with a coffee shop, a brewery, and an antiques store within a five-minute walk. Also within walking distance is Saint Charles’s Main Street, which runs along the Missouri River and is lined with shops and restaurants. The Soda Museum and Main Street Arcade, filled with memorabilia and vintage games, is a 10-minute walk, and a group of brick buildings that served as the state’s first capitol complex in the 1820s are 15 minutes away on foot.

By car, downtown St. Louis is a 30-minute drive, and Springfield, Ill. is an hour and 45 minutes away.

Size: 2,057 square feet

Price per square foot: $194

Indoors: From the sidewalk, paved steps riser to this home’s stoop, where another set of steps, these made of wood, continue to the front porch.

Inside is a foyer with hardwood floors and stairs that rise to the second level. The living room, off the foyer, has exposed brick that was, until the recent renovation of the home, covered by plaster. Two windows face the street and another faces the side yard.

Through a doorway in the living room is the updated kitchen, which has new stainless steel appliances, a black tile backsplash and space for a dining table. A combined pantry and mudroom is off the kitchen, and a hallway leads to the bedroom on this level, which has a door that opens to the backyard. A full bathroom with pink tiles and a console sink is next door.

The primary suite is on the second floor, with high ceilings and more exposed brick in the bedroom. The bathroom has a walk-in shower, and a door in the bedroom opens to a street-facing balcony. There are two more bedrooms on this level, one big enough for a queen-size bed. The smaller one is now set up as a home office. Another full bathroom, with a combined tub and shower, a window, and a linen closet, is also off the second floor’s main hall.

Outdoor space: Off the first floor’s bedroom is a covered patio, paved and big enough for outdoor dining. The backyard beyond it is grassy, and surrounded by a wood fence. Two off-street parking spots are behind the house.

Taxes: $2,928 (estimated)

Clemson, S.C. | $400,000

A midcentury ranch-style house built in 1967, on 0.3 acres

This four-bedroom, two-bathroom house was extensively remodeled by the sellers. The roof, HVAC and plumbing systems are all new, as are the kitchen and bathrooms. The garage, as part of the remodel, was linked to the home’s heating and cooling systems, and could be used as additional living space. The campus of Clemson University, which has more than 23,000 undergraduate students, is nearby, with the school’s football stadium and basketball arena both less than 10 minutes away by car.

Greenville, S.C., is a 40-minute drive, and Asheville, N.C., is less than two hours away. Both Charleston and Atlanta are within a three-hour drive.

Size: 1,507 square feet

Price per square foot: $265

Indoors: This house is set back from the street, with a door at the back of the covered front porch opening directly to the living room. A decorative fireplace here has a brick surround that has been painted black, and a large window faces the front yard. Behind the living room is an open dining area with an atomic-style light fixture and easy access to the kitchen.

The kitchen itself has a center island with a waterfall-edge quartz counter, big enough for four barstools. The appliances are stainless steel, and a window above the sink looks out over the backyard.

Three of the home’s four bedrooms are off a hallway extending from the living room, with the primary suite at the far end. It has a ceiling fan and space for a king-size bed, and in the en suite bathroom, the walk-in shower is lined with handmade green tiles. There are two other bedrooms across the hall, also with ceiling fans and a generous closet. Also off the hall is the second bathroom, this one with a combined tub and shower.

Off the kitchen is a hallway with its own exterior entrance and access to both the fourth bedroom and the garage, which has concrete floors and walls covered with a mix of wood paneling and exposed red brick.

Outdoor space: The backyard behind the house is relatively flat, and could hold a garden or a patio. The carport, attached to the garage, has two covered parking spots.

Taxes: $2,280 (estimated)
