Huntsville, Ala. (WHNT) – Madison Phillips, a second-grade teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, nominated a fellow teacher for this week’s Hoover’s Heroes, calling her “a true hero in education and a guiding light for those who know her.”

“She is the person I turn to for wisdom, encouragement, and guidance. She has shaped not only the way I teach but the way I aspire to live as an educator. Her passion, kindness, and grace inspire me every single day,” said Phillips.

So, he headed out to Providence Elementary to meet Rebekah Reed and found her in the middle of a math lesson in her second-grade classroom.

“It’s a hard job, so if you don’t have passion, it’s kind of hard to, you know, muster to get through. I just love kids. I like seeing the looks on their faces when they “get it” or when they’re happy to be here. It just inspires you to keep going and teaching them,” Reed explains.

Reed has been a teacher and curriculum specialist for 25 years. This year, she has second graders during a year that’s preparing them for the all-important third grade!

“That’s sort of what you’re doing in second grade. They learn so much in third grade. So, just getting them prepared. You don’t want them to be behind. So, when they’re in third grade, they’re getting all that extra information, and reading is crucial,” Reed said.

Reed says some students make it to second grade with very little reading proficiency. That’s why inspiring a love for reading is at the top of her list.

“Reading is huge. We spend a lot of time on just making sure, phonics, they know their skills and then just understanding what they’re reading is important,” she said

Remember, if you know a hero in your community, you can nominate them for “Hoover’s Heroes.”
