BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Demolition has begun at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, marking the end of a live music venue that was a constant in Pelham for nearly 40 years.

On Tuesday, the city of Pelham announced that the longtime venue, which first opened in 1986, was already being taken down. The demolition was part of an agreement the city had with Live Nation, the venue owner, ahead of the opening of the Coca-Cola Amphitheater in downtown Birmingham.

“What a run it’s been,” the city posted on its Facebook page Tuesday. “Oak Mountain Amphitheatre has been the soundtrack to so many unforgettable nights in Pelham—iconic performances, first concerts, and memories that will last a lifetime.”

For years, the amphitheater was the premier outdoor music venue in the Birmingham area. Over the year, countless artists made their way to Pelham to play there, such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, John Mayer, James Taylor, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band and countless others.

Post Malone was the last artist to play at Oak Mountain on Oct. 15.

“The site that once echoed with music will soon be reimagined into a vibrant destination that reflects Pelham’s energy, growth, and future,” the city said.

Coca-Cola Amphitheater will kick off the summer season next month, debuting with a performance by comedian Matt Rife on June 22. Other acts expected to play at the venue include DMB, Thomas Rhett and a newly reformed Alabama Shakes.
