New details emerged on Monday regarding a violent, single-vehicle rollover crash in a San Bernardino County desert that killed four people, ejecting three of them.
In a tragic update, the California Highway Patrol identified the victims as a 35-year-old man from Yermo, California, and three juveniles – one boy and two girls.
A spokesperson for CHP in Barstow said the crash happened around 7:45 a.m. Sunday on the I-40 Freeway near mile marker 30, west of Hector Road.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the truck, identified as a 2012 Dodge Ram, was traveling westbound on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, the 35-year-old driver lost control and veered off the road, into the desert territory.
Once off-roading, the car then completely lost control, according to CHP, and rolled over what was only described to be “multiple times.”
Three people were ejected from the car and killed upon impact, and the fourth patient died at the scene a few minutes later.
According to CHP’s incident report log, one patient was said to be trapped, partially sticking out of the car that had landed on its side.
Officials did not immediately release any names involved, nor the ages of the young victims.
“We are saddened by the tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to the families affected,” CHP said in a release.
CHP said the accident is under investigation, and that currently, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
