The New York Mets will be without All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker for the foreseeable future.

Manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Monday that Winker, who was placed on the injured list with an oblique strain, will likely be out six to eight weeks, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Winker sustained the injury in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Winker was throwing a ball to home plate when he injured his oblique, and was subsequently removed from the game.
After sitting out the second game of the doubleheader, Winker returned to New York rather than traveling with the team to Arizona. He was then placed on the injured list, and will now miss significant time.

Winker told reporters after the game that he felt the injury as soon as the ball left his hand.
“I felt it pretty much right when I threw the ball,” Winker said after the second game of the doubleheader. “I’m going to get more tests done and then we’re going to wait until all that’s settled to determine what’s going on here. … Whatever it is, I’m in good hands here. It’ll be taken care of.”
Unfortunately for Winker and the Mets, the determination was an oblique strain and a lengthy IL stint.
Winker, 31, was off to a solid start this season, slashing .239/.321/.418 with one home run, 10 RBIs and an OPS of .738. He joined the Mets at last year’s trade deadline and had an impressive performance in the postseason, slashing .318/.531/.636 with three extra-base hits, four runs batted in, seven walks to four strikeouts and an OPS of 1.168.

The Mets brought back Winker on a one-year, $8 million deal this winter. He had appeared in 24 games this season before suffering the injury.
Winker is a former first-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2012. He debuted with the Reds in 2017, and enjoyed his best season in Cincinnati in 2021, making his first and only All-Star appearance.
Since 2022, Winker has played for the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Washington Nationals and Mets. Across his seven-year career, he’s hit .262 with 96 home runs, 334 runs batted in and an OPS of .803.
