The future of James Bond remains undecided, with the sale of the franchise by owners Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson to Amazon and producers scratching their heads as to how to reintroduce 007 following the character’s demise in Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die.

All stakeholders could do worse than consider Alexander Skarsgard’s offering of a Swedish James Bond, a superspy with all the requisite Bond trappings – tuxedo, licence to kill, way with the ladies – but with a particularly Scandinavian flair.

The subject came up in an interview with The Times of London in which the Big Little Lies actor explained he previously joined his country’s national service: “I did it because I was 19, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I wanted to be James Bond for 18 months.”

Pressed on the prospect of taking this idea to the big screen, Skarsgard entered the spirit of the offering, saying:

“I could be a very polite, diplomatic Swedish James Bond, who negotiates. There’ll be no violence at all. It’ll just be boardroom meetings where people try to find consensus, everyone’s stressed out and desperately tries to avoid an argument or complications, that’s very Swedish. I’ll pitch it!”

Skarsgard, who got his big break in Zoolander and has recently appeared as a tech mogul in Succession, next appears in Murderbot, an AppleTV+ series based on the sci-fi novella series Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. Skarsgard plays an android working as a security guard for humans working on other planets. He told The Times that, following a string of darker characters, “to lean into comedy – that’s a real blast.”
