The Phoenix Suns have made a dramatic move to the front office following a very disappointing season. Phoenix has decided to demote James Jones to a new role as senior advisor for the franchise.

The team has promoted Brian Gregory to be the new head of basketball operations. Gregory has served as the vice president for the team in previous seasons.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported the news on social media.

Jones had served as the general manager for the Suns since 2019, so the team seems to be going in a different direction. Phoenix failed to make the postseason this year despite having Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker on the roster.

The Suns are expected to undergo massive changes this offseason, with Durant being seen as a strong trade candidate. It will now be up to Gregory to figure out the direction of this team, but he may be limited due to the roster in place.

Phoenix will also need to find a new head coach after it fired Mike Budenholzer following just one season with the team. This marks the third straight offseason that the Suns will be searching for a new head coach, showing some instability at the position.

The Suns have had big expectations on themselves since owner Matt Ishiba took over, but they have yet to find much success. The hope for them is that this move in the front office can be a domino effect for the rest of the organization.

For the Suns to compete in the Western Conference, the team is going to need a complete overhaul. Booker is expected to be the main piece going forward, especially if Durant is eventually traded this offseason.

Things likely won’t be easy for Gregory, and there is a lot of pressure on him to turn this team around. But the Suns clearly feel that he is the person to lead them forward, and they have confidence that this team could compete for a title next season.
