The MLB season is a little over a month old and with every day that passes, the season’s trade deadline inches closer and closer. It is never too early to begin looking at possible trade destinations for players that will for sure be on the market, or to speculate about players who may or may not be floated on the market.
A player that has come up in the recent days is Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins. It has been reported that Baltimore may look to trade Mullins if its season continues going in the wrong direction. If that decision is made, here are three teams who would greatly benefit from an addition of Mullins to their roster.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers currently have longtime infielder Javier Baez spending time in centerfield, which is very telling of the current outfield situation in Detroit.
The team ranks No. 14 in Wins Above Average from the outfield and that is thanks in large part to the surprise production Baez has given the team.
Moving Baez back into the infield, entering Mullins’ .292 average into the lineup, and letting Mullins roam centerfield makes Detroit an even scarier team to match up against.
Kansas City Royals
Kansas City is by far in the worst spot (29th) in Wins Above Average from outfielders at minus-1.9 so far this season. The current outfield of Drew Waters, Kyle Isbel and Hunter Renfroe have combined for just two home runs and a -0.5 WAR this year.
For a team that advanced to the ALDS last season, the addition of an outfield bat at some point during the season is much needed. Mullins feels like the perfect addition for not only the lineup, but also to play a very good centerfield in a big outfield at Kauffman Stadium.
Philadelphia Phillies
Given the team’s slow start to the season, it is no surprise to find the Phillies outfielders tied for 25th in Wins Above Average at minus-1.0 so far. That is tied with the Colorado Rockies who are 4-24 and on pace to set the all-time record for most losses in a season.
Mullins would be an upgrade over both Max Kepler and Johan Rojas and could be the piece that finally pushes Philadelphia over the top. Mullins boasts averages of over .300 against all current pitchers on the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins and New York Mets rosters, meaning he could a perfect fit with the Phillies.
