PHOENIX — A man received a life sentence in prison plus an additional 91.5 years for repeated sexual abuse of three children, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced on Friday.
Matthew Segundo, 40, was found guilty on nine counts, including five pertaining to molestation of a minor, a Class 2 felony.
“If he gets out, he is at risk to do this to another child (or) to somebody else, and I just never want that,” one of the victims said at Segundo’s sentencing, according to a press release.
What sexual abuse was Segundo convicted of?
Law enforcement was first alerted to Segundo’s abuse in 2022 when one of the victims told a school officer about the offenses.
Authorities went to the victim’s younger sibling, who corroborated the reports and disclosed further repeated incidents of abuse. Both lived with Segundo at the time.
During forensic interviews, a victim shared that Segundo had admitted to also abusing a third child, who was no longer living with him, according to the release.
“This predator’s selfish actions have had a lasting impact on the lives of these children,” Mitchell said in a statement. “I am in awe of these children who were willing to tell what had happened to them. Courageous victims help us put abusers in prison where they belong.”
His sentencing included an order of confinement.
Phoenix police stepped up resources to battle domestic and sexual violence this decade, supporting agencies such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual & Domestic Violence.
