Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems is releasing a sequel to Jalmari Helander’s gritty World War II action movie Sisu, with the Finnish filmmaker returning to write and direct. A November 21 theatrical release this year has been set.

Why doesn’t Lionsgate, which acquired U.S. on the film out of 2022’s TIFF Midnight Madness, handle the sequel? Essentially Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films sold domestic and kept the rest of the world (except Finland) on the first movie which made $14M global, $7.2M of that stateside. Stage 6 opted to keep global on part two.

Sisu follows an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness and tries to take the loot into the city where he clashes with a brutal SS officer and German soldiers.

Stage 6 Film’s SVP of creative development and production, Eric Charles, oversaw the film for the studio.

Jorma Tommila returns in the lead role, starring alongside Richard Brake and Stephen Lang.

Petri Jokiranta produced the film through Subzero Film Entertainment, in association with Good Chaos and Mike Goodridge. Gregory Ouanhon and Antonio Salas are EPs. The film is backed by the Finnish Film Foundation, Film Estonia, Business Finland – Audiovisual Production Incentive, Film Tampere, Viru Film Fund and BNP Paribas – COFILOISIRS – with the support of the IFCIC.

Subzero Film Entertainment was established in 2012 by Jokiranta and Helander after the success of their previous film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Under their Subzero banner Jokiranta and Helander team on high-concept genre projects mainly for Helander to helm and Subzero to produce. 2015’s Big Game from Helander starred Samuel L. Jackson and Jim Broadbent. It was the first title produced under Subzero banner.
