ALABAMA (WHNT) — While he hasn’t directly denied rumors that he could run for governor, United States Senator Tommy Tuberville says he hasn’t made an official decision.
Alabama political news sites are reporting that Tuberville, while back in Alabama during Congress’s recess, told donors during a Wednesday night dinner that he had made up his mind and would be running for governor instead of vying for a second term in the U.S. Senate.
Tuberville responded to the reports on his X on Thursday afternoon.
“While I appreciate all the interest, Suzanne and I are still praying about how to best serve the people of Alabama. When I have an official announcement about my future, you’ll hear it directly from me,” Tuberville posted.
If Tuberville were elected, he would replace Governor Kay Ivey, who can not run for a third term.
Tuberville first teased the possibility of a run for governor in March during a press call.
Tuberville said then that he would do what he believes is best for the people of Alabama.
“I’m not, I just don’t do this to be doing it,” Tuberville said. “I’m not up here for any kind of ego. I wouldn’t run for governor for any kind of ego. I want to help the people of Alabama.”
The senator said he’s learned a lot during his time in Congress. Tuberville has previously said that he would be running for re-election for his Senate.
Tuberville, who was elected in 2020 after defeating incumbent Doug Jones, confirmed to CNN’s Manu Raju in November 2024 that he would be running for office again in 2026.
“Yeah, I’m running,” Tuberville said. “Yeah, I’m getting on up there. I don’t know how many more times I’ll run, but I enjoy it.”
Other possible candidates for governor include Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth and Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate.
Both the Alabama Governor’s election and U.S. Senate election are November 3, 2026.
