If you love Baby Yoda, then you’ll love the adorable puppet creature in The Legend of Ochi, a new fantasy film coming to theaters this weekend. Puppets are so much cuter than CGI, don’t you think?
Written and direct by Isaiah Saxon in his feature film debut, The Legend of Ochi is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure about a young girl named Yuri (played by Helena Zengel), who lives on a secluded island with her father, Maxim (played by Willem Dafoe), and her adopted older brother, Petro (played by Finn Wolfhard). The people of the island fear the Ochi, a monkey-like creature that Maxim says kidnapped his wife. To avenge her, Maxim leads the island’s children on regular Ochi hunting expeditions. When Yuri takes an injured Ochi baby home, she must embark on an adventure without her family, to help the baby Ochi reunite with its family.
The Legend of Ochi first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January, where critics praised the film’s look, creature design, and cinematography. Now, the film is coming to theaters across the U.S. Here’s what to know about where to watch The Legend of Ochi, and when we expect to see The Legend of Ochi on streaming.
Where to watch The Legend of Ochi movie:
The Legend of Ochi will only available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. in theaters nationwide on Friday, April 25. (The movie opened in select U.S. theaters last week, on April 18.) You can find a showing near you via Fandango. The Legend of Ochi movie is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Is The Legend of Ochi movie streaming on Netflix?
The Legend of Ochi is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix in the U.S. any time soon, due to the fact that the film is an A24 release, and the 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, brings all A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the Warner Bros. streaming service Max. (Formerly known as HBO Max.) If you want to watch The Legend of Ochi movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on Max.
When will The Legend of Ochi be streaming on HBO’s Max?
The Legend of Ochi is not yet streaming on Max. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see The Legend of Ochi streaming on Max eventually—thanks to the A24 and Warner Bros. deal—but we’re not sure when.
The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights to The Legend of Ochi, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, Babygirl, will begin streaming on Max on April 25, about four months after its release in theaters, and about three months after its release on digital.
If The Legend of Ochi follows a similar release strategy, you might see The Legend of Ochi on digital in about a month, around late May 2025, and streaming on Max in about four months, around late August 2025.
This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch The Legend of Ochi right away, you can catch the movie in U.S. theaters nationwide on Friday.
