Broadway had what appears to be its best non-holiday week ever last week, with major hits like Good Night, and Good Luck, Glengarry Glen Ross, Othello and longrunners The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin helping push the total box office figure to $50,874,940 for the week ending April 20.
The figure, for 40 shows, is a huge 47% greater than this week last year. Total attendance of 357,319 was 19% more year-over-year.
Contributing to the big tally were special nine-performance weeks from The Lion King (for a gross of $2,940,497), Wicked ($3,333,277) and Aladdin ($2,027,723).
Even more significantly, the gargantuan total was reached with major contributions from a raft of newly arrived star-packed sell-out productions such as Good Night, and Good Luck with George Clooney ($3,882,090, yet another house record at the Winter Garden), Glengarry Glen Ross with Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr ($2,362,516, the production’s fourth house record at the Palace), and Othello with Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal ($3,128,929).

(And the obligatory reminder to keep in mind that house records are broken in no small measure because of ever-rising ticket prices, with the average seat price at Good Night going for about $310, Glengarry $227 and Othello $376. Top premium ticket prices were going for $825, $699 and $897, respectively.)
But even some of the more recently arrived earthbound (relatively speaking) productions were doing strong business.
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow, still in previews last week (it opens tonight) sold out the big 1,594-seat Marquis, grabbing $1,155,370;
- Just In Time, starring Jonathan Groff as Bobby Darin, once again sold out Circle in the Square for a seven-preview take of $847,812. Opening night is April 26;
- Smash, the mixed-reviewed musical at the Imperial, broke the $1M mark last week, grossing $1,015,592. That’s even with some heavily-comped post-opening performances. Attendance was at 88.29% of capacity;
- The Picture of Dorian Gray starring Sarah Snook, despite a planned six-performance week, took in $1,139,078, filling the Music Box for all six shows;
- John Proctor Is The Villain, the rave-reviewed play starring Sadie Sink, opened at standing room only at the Booth, gaining $90,904 (even with some heavy comps) in sales over the previous week for a total $495,711;
- Pirates! The Penzance Musical starring Ramin Karimloo, David Hyde Pierce, Jinkx Monsoon and Nicholas Barasch, was at 97% of capacity at non-prof Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre, with a gross of $509,876. Opens April 24;
- The Last Five Years starring Adrienne Warren and Nick Jonas, grossed $805,337, at 95% of capacity at the Hudson;
- Dead Outlaw, in previews at the Longacre, filled 99% of available seats at its six performances for a $405,410 total – a bargain at an average $65.27 per seat. Opens April 27;
- Floyd Collins, which opened to positive reviews this week, was still in previews last week at the non-prof Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont, filling 86% of seats for a $573,107 gross. The reviews should boost that tally for next week’s chart.
Meanwhile, Operation Mincemeat continued its strong run at the Golden, up $66,471 over the previous week for a total of $812,589. And Buena Vista Social Club kept hitting those high notes, filling just about every seat at the Schoenfeld for a tally of $1,072,551.
Boop! The Musical has yet to catch fire at the Broadhurst, despite some terrific notices for star Jasmine Amy Rogers, grossing $659,806 and filling just 85% of seats, even with an average ticket of about $85. The previewing Real Women Have Curves: The Musical at the James Earl Jones will need very strong reviews (opening night is April 27) to pull it out of the doldrums: Last week the show grossed only $359,659, and even with a $58 average ticket filled only 73% of available seats.
Season to date, Broadway, in the 48th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $1,667,508,025, up about 20% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 12,967,851 up 17%.
