The long-rumored Oblivion remaster has finally arrived, as Bethesda both officially revealed and launched the game within the same day. The new version of the classic RPG has a “modern look and refined suite of features and updates,” according to the publisher. It’s currently available to play on PC (via Steam and the Xbox app), Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, and is also on Xbox Game Pass.
This new Oblivion features all of the content from the original game, including the Knights of Nine and Shivering Isles expansions. In addition to a cosmetic makeover via Unreal Engine 5, it’s also added new gameplay features to, by Bethesda’s own admission, bring it up to par with modern RPGs. These include a new leveling system, a refined UI, new dialogue to better delineate different races and factions, as well as the ability to sprint.
Rumors about the Oblivion remaster first started appearing in a serious context after the Microsoft/FTC document leaks in 2023. Bethesda developed the remaster in partnership with Virtuos, which has worked on several remasters and ports in the past. These include Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
Bethesda said in a social media post that it began developing the game in 2021 and that it worked with Virtuos to remaster every part of the animation and effects. “Some new voices would be recorded, while keeping the originals there as well. Game systems were updated to feel better in your hands. Leveling systems modified for smoother progression and balance. We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it. But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one.”
