Is ‘Conclave’ on Netflix? No, But There’s Another Great Pope Movie on Netflix You Should Watch

In the wake of the death of Pope Francis, who died at age 88 on Monday morning, everybody wants to watch the Conclave movie.

That makes sense, given that Edward Berger’s Oscar-winning 2024 film is quite literally a dramatization of the process that takes place after a pope dies: the cardinals gather in Vatican City to vote on the next pope. Conclave—a mystery-thriller based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris––jazzes up this real-life process with some fictional scandals that are uncovered by an ethical Cardinal (played by Ralph Fienes) who discovers his colleagues and papal hopefuls are hiding some dark secrets. It’s hard to say how accurate the Conclave movie is, but it’s certainly an interesting speculation on what might be going down in Vatican City right now.

Unfortunately, if you want to watch Conclave on Netflix, you’re out of luck. But don’t despair, because there is another great pope movie on Netflix that you absolutely should watch, and that’s the 2019 Oscar-nominated drama The Two Popes.

Is Conclave on Netflix?

Sadly, Conclave is not on Netflix, and will likely not be on Netflix anytime soon. This is because Conclave is a Universal movie, and right now, thanks to a Universal-Amazon deal, all Universal movies go to Peacock for the first and last four months of the “Pay 1” window, and stream on Amazon Prime in the in-between months. Conclave is not currently on Peacock, but we expect the movie to return to Peacock in about nine months, around February 2026.

Right now, Conclave is streaming on Amazon Prime, free to anyone with a subscription. You can watch Conclave free on Amazon Prime Video, or you can buy or rent a digital copy of the movie.

What is the pope movie on Netflix?

Good news, Netflix subscribers! There is indeed a pope movie on Netflix called The Two Popes, and it’s a great film. This based-on-a-true story movie takes place in 2012, starring Jonathan Pryce as then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (the future Pope Francis) and Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI. The future, liberal pope and current, conservative pope talk, exchange ideas, and reflect on the state of the Catholic Church in the days following Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation request in the face of the Vatican leaks scandal.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, and written by Anthony McCarten, The Two Popes was adapted from McCarten’s 2019 play The Pope. It feels like a play, too, in that the film is simply two hours of conversation between two old—albeit very important—men.  There are no explosions, no teary monologues, and certainly no romance. But in the hands of two masters like Hopkins and Pryce, this conversation is more than compelling enough to keep your interest. The two stars earned well-deserved Oscar nominations for Best Actor (Pryce) and Best Supporting Actor (Hopkins), and McCarten nabbed a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Though based on real people and real situations, the dialogue is all speculation. What might have Pope Benedict XVI said when he made the historic, unprecedented decision to retire? What might have a young(er) Pope Francis said to convince a much more conservative, German-born, traditional to pick him—a liberal from Argentina—as his successor? We’ll never know for sure, but perhaps it might have gone something like this.
