DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur City Council said it will move forward in the interview process with one police chief candidate.
The Decatur City Council told News 19 they are moving forward with Captain Torrey Mack. City Council Human Resource Director Richelle Sandlin confirmed to News 19 that there were no other candidates that they desired to move forward with.
The process will continue publicly, and Council President Jacob Ladner said more updates will come next week.
From 18 applicants, the hiring pool was narrowed down to two candidates, Mack and Theophilus Smith, on March 31. According to city leaders, those applicants were originally broken into three groups during the process: six that met the requirements, eight that did not receive the recommendations for the job, and four were considered ‘on hold’ candidates.
Ladner said that both Smith and Mack possess a minimum of 30 years of experience.
Mack is currently a captain and commander of the Special Enforcement Division in the Birmingham Police Department. Smith previously served as police chief and recently began work in the Jefferson County sheriff’s office.
“They had a lot of experience in leading police departments,” Ladner said.
Just days after the hiring pool was narrowed down to two candidates for Decatur police chief, Smith withdrew his name. Ladner said that when Smith withdrew, the council would call six of the selected ‘on hold’ candidates to schedule interviews, but now they will only move forward with the interview process for Mack.
