Design Within Reach (DWR) has transformed the Palm Desert’s historic Miles C. Bates “Wave House” into a Paul Smith oasis, as part of a new deal with the curated vacation rental platform, Boutique.
Celebrating the launch of DWR Presents: The Paul Smith Collection — an exclusive line of indoor and outdoor furniture lauding the British designer’s longstanding collaboration with Maharam — the architectural icon has been staged with the duo’s special-edition pieces, spanning the Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair to Eero Saarinen’s Womb Chair in Maharam textiles with Paul Smith’s signature patterns.
Designed by Walter S. White in 1955, the mid-century modern house is known for its curvaceous roof shaped after the nearby San Jacinto mountains. The home, which is now listed as a City of Palm Desert Historical Landmark, was built as a vacation spot and sculptor’s studio for Bates, who transformed the place into a “social hub” in the Coachella Valley. Notably, the “Wave House” was opened to the public for the first time in February 2020, after Stayner Architects restored the property.

“The Paul Smith Collection is incredibly versatile and can work across a multitude of geographies and architectural styles,” said Omar Nobil, senior vice president and creative director at DWR. “However, we chose to launch the experiential aspect of the collection in the ‘Wave House’ because of the homes’ original and bold design that parallels the collection.”
Nowill added that the property stands out for its “eccentric gesture of the roof design, which is set amongst the dramatic landscape of the low desert.”
Beginning today, April 21, the “Wave House” is now open for bookings on Boutique’s platform, and pieces from the Paul Smith Collection are available to shop online. Take a look inside the property above.
