A British Airways flight attendant was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room during a layover last week, officials confirmed to multiple media outlets.

The “popular” flight attendant failed to show up for the crew’s return flight to London’s Heathrow Airport following 48 hours in SF, according to a report in The Independent.

The other crew members on the flight were reportedly too distraught to continue and the flight was canceled.

“There was no way the flight back from San Francisco could go ahead. Staff were in absolute bits at the sudden loss of their friend,” said a source quoted in a separate report in The Sun.

Before the crew member was discovered dead, the pilots left the hotel for San Francisco International Airport. Cabin crew and inflight managers waited for him in the hotel reception, reportedly.

When he failed to turn up, they went up to his room and discovered he was deceased. According to The Independent, it’s believed his body lay in the room undiscovered for two days.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of our colleague at this difficult time,” said British Airways in a statement to The Independent.

There was no immediate word on what caused the flight attendant’s death.
