The Marvel Cinematic Universe released the official trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which revealed Julia Garner‘s Silver Surfer and teased supervillain Galactus (Ralph Ineson).
The trailer kicks off in a futuristic past outside on an alternate Earth, then the central MCU universe. A TV host begins explaining the origins of the Fantastic Four: “Four brave astronauts head up into space and come back forever changed.” He thanks them and introduces them to a cheering crowd.
Susan Storm (Vanessa Kirby) and Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) are late to dinner with Johnny Blaze (Joseph Quinn) and the Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), where they reveal they are expecting a baby. Moments later, a red storm from the sky appears, and the Silver Surfer arrives, informing the four that their planet has been marked for death.
Chaotic scenes and intense music escalate the trailer quickly but smoothly into intense action. Mr. Fantastic claims responsibility by admitting he stretched the bounds of space, and “they” heard. They battle together throughout the trailer, with scenes cut in by the uncertainty of the public and themselves; it ends with Mr. Fantastic vowing, “We will protect you.”
A brief post-credit-like teaser at the end shows the gigantic footsteps of Galactus but does not show his whole appearance. The trailer is available above.
Most notable in the trailer is Garner’s rendition of the Silver Surfer. It’s a significant gender change from its original form in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The reveal of the latest Silver Surfer is almost a complete replicate, sporting the same skin tone and board as the original Silver Surfer (Doug Jones).
However, some fans are upset by this decision to change the character’s gender. According to GameRant, some fans are accusing Marvel of making a “woke” decision; however, a female Silver Surfer was initially written as far back as 1968, but was pulled from Marvel.
Fans are split on how they are receiving the newest look at the Silver Surfer, with the biggest issue being the quality of her appearance. One user wrote, “Welp, the 2005 Silver Surfer has better CGI compared to something that came out 20 f****** years later.”
Another posted an opposing view of what others deemed as unimpressive, writing, “I’ve seen enough. Our first look at the Silver Surfer being her surfing on a storm cloud is the coolest thing ever.”
The tease of Galactus seems to have been received much more to fans’ liking. The brief shot of him stomping through New York has fans excited to see what the destroyer will be like in the film.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theaters July 25.
