Tights With Sandals Are a Thing Now

In the past, you may prescribed to the long-standing belief that wearing tights with sandals was a big fashion no-no. Not even in winter. But this rule is made to be broken—at least, that’s the case several fashion pros are making this spring. And who better to declare a change in policy than those on the inside?

And so, tights with sandals are a thing now. And not with the kind of shoes you might expect.

What we mean is, if you’ve dared to wear tights with open-toed shoes before, you probably kept it simple with black stockings and strappy heels. While still somewhat unconventional, this pairing is well on its way to become normalized thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber, as well as several street style stars, recently adopting the look.

Just reference these outfits any time wearing dresses with sandals starts to feel stale.

Lately, however, we’ve seen several stylish women taking things even further by pairing their tights with shoes that previously would have been considered unsuitable—including thong sandals.

Designer Gala González is one example of the new way to wear tights with sandals. She combined her double-strapped flats, which were covered in micro Swarovski crystals, with semi-transparent black stockings to great effect.

Former Man Repeller editor Leandra Medine decided to pair her thong sandals—yes, thong sandals—with sheer tights in black. She paired the unexpected look with long black trouser shorts and a red jacket.

She’s not an outlier, either. Model Vittoria Ceretti and other street style stars have paired their tights with thongs too.

This combo may look surprising at first, but it’s an ingenious styling hack for transitional weather when you really think about it. It allows you to finally put your winter wardrobe away and pull out those spring shorts, dresses, and sandals while still staying warm on chillier days.
