Even if you are the voice of one of the most beloved bands on the planet, even if the world has been welcoming you with applause for years, there are still days when everything looks gray. Chris Martin, frontman of Coldplay, decided to talk about those very moments with a video posted to Instagram earlier this week, recorded after a concert in Hong Kong.

“Hi, this is Chris from Coldplay. We’re in Hong Kong … I’ve noticed that some people lately, including myself, are struggling a little bit with depression,” he says in the video. “So I wanted to talk to you about some things that are helping me on tour and in life in general, in the hope that they can help you as well.”

It is a list of simple, personal tools that Martin has collected over time. He talks, for example, about free writing, explaining, “something called freeform writing, where you write for twelve minutes whatever’s on your mind, and then you burn the paper or throw it away. It’s really good for you.”

In his journey, he says, transcendental meditation has also been important: “It’s been wonderful for me.” And then he cites proprioception. “It’s a type of body movement that helps balance the brain,” he explains. “There’s a man named Jim Costello, he came up with the Costello Method, which is very helpful especially for young people with ADHD or autism.”

The Coldplay frontman also mentions a book called The Oxygen Advantage, and calls it “great for breathing,” recommends listening to Music For Psychedelic Therapy by Jon Hopkins and watching the movie Sing Sing, with music by Chloe Qisha, which “makes me very happy.” And again, “These are some of the things that help me stay grateful and happy to be alive. I hope you are well, I send you lots of love. If you come to Seoul, see you soon. Bye.”

This is certainly not the first time Martin has addressed the topic of mental health. After his 11-year marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow ended in 2014, he had spoke about how difficult it was to start over. “I used to wake up every morning depressed,” he told The Sunday Times. “There are still many days when I wake up and feel down, but this experience has given me extra tools to keep going.”

In 2023, during the 17th annual Hope Luncheon seminar dedicated specifically to depression awareness, Dakota Johnson, his partner of more than seven years, spoke about him. The actress, who recounted suffering from depression since her teenage years, explained, “Chris has been there for me in the most difficult times. There is a gentleness in the way he supports me that I have never found before.”

For Martin, music has always been his refuge. In an interview with NME on the occasion of the release of the new album Moon Music, he had said, “My head tends to be filled with negativity, and music has always been the place where I find some light and meaning for the difficult things in my life, or in the lives of others.”
