Tyra Banks may have been one of the biggest supermodels of her generation, but she revealed on Today With Jenna & Friends that she was “never” necessarily close friends with her colleagues at the time.
The former supermodel and talk show host joined Jenna Bush Hager on Today as a guest host for the week, where she dished on her storied career in high fashion and television before she eventually retired to focus on motherhood.
Bush Hager asked if Banks is still “buddies” with the other supermodels who gained popularity in the ’90s, such as Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista.
“I never was!” she responded, much to Bush Hager’s surprise. “No, I was looking at them, like, ‘Oh my gosh Linda Evangelista, oh my gosh Christy Turlington.’ I was a little bit younger so I used to look up to them.”
As for Moss, Banks said she felt starstruck one of the recent times they ran into each other backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
“Kate Moss and me, we were the same generation but I didn’t really have a friend group and she did. I was kind of by myself,” Banks explained.
“It was like the biggest smile that she gave me across the room and my little unpopular girl in the cafeteria self was like, ‘Kate Moss is saying hi to me!’” she recalled.
Banks explained that she felt like Moss “was cool back then and I wasn’t,” adding, “I was a supermodel but not in the clique.”
Banks also looked back on her time hosting The Tyra Banks Show. She also served as an executive producer on The CW show, which ran for five seasons.
She said that she felt “unhappy” at the peak of her career when she was juggling her talk show, America’s Next Top Model, and modeling.
“Jenna, I was miserable,” she admitted. “I felt like when I was walking to my talk show set that I had a meat hook in my back and it was saying, ‘Just stop, stop,’ and I was pulling against it because it was just too much.”
But it looks like Banks doesn’t mind being back in the spotlight too much. She told Bush Hager, “But I’m here with you and I’m like this feels good.”
