“There’s a bit of freak in each other.”
So teases Denise Gough, who plays the steely, Imperial lieutenant career woman Dedra Meero about her character’s season 2 relationship with Empire underling Syril Karn, played by Kyle Soller. Syril was last seen saving Dedra’s hide in the season one finale crowd melee, the duo climaxing in an almost Han Solo-Princess Leia-like kissy-kiss embrace. Deadline spoke to Gough at the Disney+ Hollywood Andor season 2 kickoff event.
“There’s someone for everyone, right?” Gough told us about Dedra and Syril’s romance this season, “They fit each other’s wound somehow.”
However, the problem isn’t him. By golly, he’s not playing mind games or ghosting; rather it’s her. No wait, blame ‘The Man’!

“Unfortunately, Dedra, is really not capable. She can’t help but manipulate because her one true love is the Empire!”
“She kind of denies herself trying to get to a point where she could be really intimate with somebody because her boyfriend is the Empire!” exclaimed Gough.

“It’s not really him that brings out the worst in her — it’s the Empire!” expounded the Irish actress, “You have to watch to see what she gets involved in. But there are things that she has to do this season for the Empire that means she has to sacrifice any possibility that she can have a healthy normal relationship.”

When it comes to the actress’ inspiration when playing Dedra, it’s no one historical, rather Giancarlo Esposito’s drug lord from Breaking Bad.
“I did like his meticulous thing when he kills that guy, then he takes his shirt off, he showers, it’s really clean and cool,” says Gough, “There were elements of Gus that I stole, because all the best people steal.”
