HBO officially announced the first cast members for its upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation.
John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost are set to take on the roles of Album Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively. All four join the cast as series regular. Meanwhile, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse will portray Quirinus Quirrell and Argus Filch in guest/recurring roles. The actors portraying Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are yet to be announced.
“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
Described as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling‘s beloved Harry Potter book series, the series promises to “[explore] every corner of the wizarding world.” Each season will also “bring Harry Potter and its incredible adventures to new and existing audiences” as the original eight films “remain at the core of the franchise.”
Francesca Gardiner will serve as write and executive producer. Mark Mylod, who will also direct several episodes, will executive produce with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman will executive produce.
