DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Just days after the hiring pool was narrowed down to two candidates for Decatur police chief, one of the candidates has withdrawn their name.
According to Decatur City Human Resources Director Richelle Sandlin, Theophilus Smith has withdrawn his name from the interview process.
Smith, who was one of the final candidates alongside Torry Mack, was scheduled to have a public interview at the Turner Surles in Decatur on Wednesday afternoon.
The pool was narrowed down to two from 18 applicants that the city council went through. According to city leaders, those applicants were originally broken into three groups during the process: six that met the requirements, eight that did not receive the recommendations for the job, while four were considered ‘on hold’ candidates.
City Council President Jacob Ladner told News 19 last week that both Smith and Mack had recommendations from good people, but added there were lots of good applicants in the pool.
“They are highly qualified people, but I thought we had a lot of good people and out of the 18, there were several highly qualified folks,” Ladner said.
Smith previously served as police chief and recently began work in the Jefferson County sheriff’s office.
Mack, the other finalist selected in the pool, is currently a captain and commander of the Special Enforcement Division in the Birmingham Police Department.
Ladner says that now Smith has withdrawn, the council will now be calling six of the selected ‘on hold’ candidates to schedule interviews.
