OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. (WHNT) — According to a public notice, another hearing regarding the renewal of an embattled mental health center’s business license will be held in June.
In March, the Owens Cross Roads City Council voted not to renew Pathway of Madison County, LLC’s business license for a second time. The first vote for non-renewal came in January.
This public hearing marks another step in the process of taking away the business’s license to operate. During the meeting, the center can call witnesses and make its case for staying open.
Pathways will be allowed to continue to operate during this time.
Pathway of Madison County, formerly known as Pathway Inc., contracts with the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) to provide mental health services to children. DHR has previously said the company has two licenses for facilities in Owens Cross Roads, one for moderate services and the other for intensive services.
An attorney for Pathway said the facility no longer offers intensive care services during a hearing regarding the facility on March 3.
The treatment center fell under heavy scrutiny after a September riot broke out at what DHR said was the company’s moderate service facility. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office told News 19 that law enforcement arrested several girls following the disturbance.
During a hearing in early March, an attorney for the facility claimed that the riot was due to leadership issues and said the facility had since hired a new executive director and made other changes.
