As Dolly Parton once sang, “baby, I’m burnin’.” Hailee Steinfeld just hit the red carpet in a flame-broiled outfit that truly lit a fire in our desire to describe it. She’s one flaming hot Cheeto! Alexa, play “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys. Siri, play the Hunger Games movie Catching Fire. Welcome back, Joan of Arc!
For the European premiere of her new movie Sinners, the actor chose a sheer mesh one-shouldered gown over what looks like a black bodysuit and matching sheer Opera-length gloves, all of it screen printed with close-ups of orange flames. With a long train, there’s sort of an optical illusion created, making it look like the fire is approaching Steinfeld.
Written and directed by Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler, Sinners follows twin brothers “trying to leave their troubled lives behind. [They] return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back,” per IMDb. Michael B. Jordan plays both brothers, named Smoke and Stack, while Steinfeld’s character is Mary. So, does this count as method dressing? Eh, let’s go with yes, it’s definitely thematic.
Overall, the effect is eye-catching and very sexy. Up close, it looks like theres a silver zipper on the side of the garment.
In a recent interview, Hailee Steinfeld opened up about how her role in the film prompted her to find out more about her own heritage. Mary is written to have a half-Black grandfather, which is true for Steinfeld as well, she explained to Blavity. “The research [for the role] was my family and my family history. And ‘the best part of the job’ didn’t feel like part of the job. It felt like these amazing conversations that…it’s easy to say [that], I wish happened sooner, but I’m so grateful that they’re happening now.”
“I brought me so much closer to my mom and to my grandfather. [With this role], my imagination ran wild with thoughts of what his life might’ve looked like growing up, what his parents’ life might’ve looked like. I’m just so honored to be a part of this story and of this world that, while it’s wild, and exciting, and fun, and there’s jump scares that’ll really get you, and the music is incredible—it’s so important. And this served me in a way that I didn’t know I needed so bad,” she said.
