Dogs’ brains might not work the same way humans do, but boy, have they figured out how to push our buttons. Somehow, they’ve figured out just how to get what they want without ever speaking a word. And as far as the dog below goes to show, some are a real master at this skill.
Golden Retrievers aren’t exactly known as lazy dogs, but watching Reef in this TikTok video, you’d never know it. He’s not really lazy — just a very good actor who will avoid having to climb into the car himself at all costs.
As we can see in this video shared by @reefthegolden_ this week, it’s time for Reef the Golden Retriever to get in the car, but he doesn’t want to do it. So what does he do instead? Lay on the ground and pretend to be lazy, of course.
To his credit, though, his plan worked… and it didn’t even take that long for his dad to fold. This was just too easy.

Dogs Have Certain Ways of Getting What They Want
While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Reef (or any dog) manipulative, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), science shows that dogs dohave the capability to manipulate their humans… whether that’s through the use of puppy dog eyes or laying on the driveway until someone finally picks them up and puts them in the car. They do an action, they realize that action got them what they wanted (or didn’t), so they repeat it — it really is that simple.
And speaking of puppy dogs eyes, the AKC noted that a study conducted by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that dogs may have evolved to make certain facial expressions so that they can communicate with humans more clearly, and puppy dog eyes and eyebrow movement have been shown to increase the likelihood that a dog will be adopted. Apparently, it also increases the likelihood that a dog will get carried into the car. Thanks for that experiment, Reef!
