Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler has reunited with longtime collaborator and actor Michael B. Jordan on Sinners, a supernatural thriller hitting theaters on April 18. Sinners tells the story of twin brothers who return home to Clarksdale, Mississippi, only to encounter an evil threatening to consume everything they hold dear.

The anchor star of massively successful franchises Creed, Black Panther and Coogler’s directorial debut, Fruitvale Station, delivers yet another novel performance, doubling on the silver screen as his own identical twin. The anticipated release marks the fifth collaborative effort between Jordan and Coogler, a creative bond spanning eleven years characterized by the duo’s character-driven and genre-defying approach to storytelling.

Jordan commands the screen as resident gangsters (and soulful brothers) Smoke and Stack, who aspire to start anew and open a juke joint in their hometown. Things turn left when malevolent vampires encroach on town denizens, slowly biting away at familial bonds. Jordan explores his emotional range in a thrilling horror format, bringing depth and heart to the protagonists. In recent interviews, Coogler has opened up about the incorporation of mysticism and thematic allegories exploring the menacing nature of evil, and his choice to challenge Jordan with two roles in one. The talented actor showcases undeniable versatility between the siblings, each struggling with personal demons threatening to break from the flesh.

Throughout the film, Coogler uses blues music as a poetic vehicle to channel the film’s psychological undertones, with star-studded performances by Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller and more rounding out the cast. Coogler shot in large format, utilizing IMAX and System 65 to evoke a sense of heightened immersion and replicate the human eye’s perspective; viewers can expect a satisfying cinematic experience.

Mark your calendars for April 18, and check out Sinners’ official trailer above.
