Amanda Peet’s teen daughters ‘turned off’ “Something’s Gotta Give” over mom’s ‘inappropriate and unethical’ Jack Nicholson scene

Key Points

  • Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn appeared on The View ahead of their new show, Your Friends & Neighbors.

  • Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Peet about family, and the star noted her girls have seen one of her films.

  • Peet joked that she let them see Something’s Gotta Give because she’s “not actually nude in it.”

Amanda Peet’s teen daughters weren’t as thrilled about their mom’s scenes with Jack Nicholson in the 2003 rom-com Something’s Gotta Give as audiences and critics were at the time of the movie’s release.

The actress appeared Thursday on The View alongside costar Olivia Munn to promote their upcoming Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, while conservative cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin turned the conversation toward Peet’s relationship with her family.

“You have three kids, including two teenage daughters. I understand you would like to be a cool mom, but may not be succeeding at it,” Griffin told Peet, while Munn jumped in to add that “Amanda is the coolest” — though her daughters didn’t feel the same way about their mother’s role in Nancy Meyers‘ modern classic.

“They don’t watch anything that I’ve ever been in,” Peet added of her kids, whom she shares with screenwriter-producer David Benioff. “Finally, I was like, I think Something’s Gotta Give is the one that I can show them because it’s a beautiful romantic comedy, it’s [got] Diane Keaton, my idol!”

She also called the film “pretty” and “light,” and joked that she’s “not actually nude in it” — so that made it appropriate for her daughters. Well, so she thought.

“They saw the first five minutes, when I’m coupled with Jack Nicholson, and they were like, ‘This is so inappropriate and unethical. Do you know anything about third-wave feminism? Why did you take this part?’ So, they turned it off!”

The film follows Nicholson’s character, Harry, a 63-year-old playboy who only dates younger women, with the film opening on his relationship with new girlfriend Marin Klein, the 29-year-old daughter of Keaton’s character, Erica.

Upon its initial release, Something’s Gotta Give received glowing reviews from critics, who praised the film’s cast and the story. Keaton also received a Best Actress nomination for her performance at the 2004 Oscars.

The film — also starring Keanu Reeves and Frances McDormand — was a commercial success, generating $267 million in global box office sales against a reported $80 million budget.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC. Your Friends & Neighbors debuts Friday on Apple TV+.
