Good news, Jane Austen fans: Netflix has found its Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Emma Corrin will star as Elizabeth Bennett and Jack Lowden will portray Mr. Darcy in a new six-part adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, with Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennett.
The second novel written by Austen, Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennett, the second of five daughters, as she rails against the marriage plot and meets the single and seemingly curmudgeonly Mr. Darcy. Production on the series will begin in the U.K. later this year. Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) will write the script, and the series will be directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). According to Netflix, the series will be a “faithful, classic adaptation of the novel” from Alderton, who hopes audiences will cherish it “whilst inspiring a new generation to fall in love with Austen for the first time.”
Corrin, who is nonbinary, won a Golden Globe for portraying Princess Diana on the fourth season of The Crown. They’ve gone on to star in Nosferatu and Black Mirror. They’ll also serve as an executive producer on the series and on it will reunite with Colman, who played Queen Elizabeth on the fourth season of The Crown. Scottish actor Jack Lowden currently stars on the Emmy-nominated Slow Horses. Last year, he starred opposite his wife Saoirse Ronan in The Outrun.
“Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Corrin. “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”
It’s been 20 years since Keira Knightly and Mathew MacFadyen‘s film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which returns to theaters for a limited release on April 20. It’s been 30 years since Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle portrayed Elizabeth and Darcy in the 1995 TV drama from BBC and A&E Networks. Every generation gets the Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy they deserve.
