Puppies are very curious. Though there are a lot of things they’re scared of (keep in mind that they haven’t experienced a lot yet!), they love to be exploring anything and everything they possibly can.
For one sweet, brave Golden Retriever puppy, the scary spiky ball is the end of the line. He’ll journey through whatever life throws at him, but the spiky ball is a whole different animal. Yet, on Wednesday, April 2nd, he took it on in a battle for the ages:
Hugo the Golden Pup is truly the bravest boy in the world. That spiky ball is a worthy adversary!

There are three pups in this video: Hugo (the tiny fearless leader), Maui (the older Golden Retriever), and Ruby (the Corgi/oldest). The three of them have been getting along pretty well so far, but Hugo is a little too big for his britches, which is to be expected with a puppy.
Hugo will take on just about anything. He’s a master at the stairs. He’s not afraid to throw down with his siblings or chase after his parents with gusto. He is, however, hilariously afraid of this spiky ball toy. It doesn’t bounce or anything, and still, he’s like:
It’s not at all uncommon for a puppy to be scared of things: remember, they’re experiencing everything for the first time. Whether that’s a new taste, texture, smell, or sound, they might be apprehensive of anything and everything the first time they encounter it.
The best way to minimize this is simply exposure, but you shouldn’t be rubbing their nose in whatever they’re scared of. Start by putting it in the room with them or walking them near it. Then get closer. As they get more comfortable, you can familiarize them with whatever the object is even more.
Hugo probably won’t get much more exposure to that ball, though. It’s definitely scared of him now! What a brave, tough boy!
