ASUS has announced four new limited-edition models in its Zenbook laptop family, all of which have been crafted using its proprietary Ceraluminum technology – a super-lightweight material the brand created in-house.
The Ceraluminum Signature Edition collection comprises four laptops in colors “inspired by Earth’s most breathtaking landscapes”, with the brand seeking inspiration from places including Jordan’s Wadi Rum and Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives. The collection’s organic color palette is said to reflect nature’s raw beauty, including all-black model that features a rough textured pattern on its surface to resemble black volcanic rock that ASUS calls “Obsidian Black”; there’s also a deep blue option covered in bright dots called “Luminous Blue”, mimicking the bioluminescent plankton that light up the shores of the Maldives’ Vaadhoo Island; a “Pamukkale White” version, peppered with specs of gold, is reminiscent of the mineral-rich water that flows down white rock hills in Pamukkale, Turkey; while a chocolate brown colorway, known as “Terra Mocha”, is inspired by the sandstone and granite rock of Jordan’s Wadi Rum, also known as the “Valley of the Moon”, an internationally protected UNESCO World Heritage site where multiple petroglyphs left behind by prehistoric civilizations have been found
Ceraluminum – a portmanteau of ceramic and aluminum – is one of ASUS’ latest material innovations. It was created by the brand as an alternative to full-body metal or plastic laptops, but is said to blend the best qualities from both. ASUS describes Ceraluminum as “a patented technology that merges the lightness of metal with the resilience of ceramics”, claiming it is made by bonded ceramic (“ceramizing”) with aluminum. In our experience using a recently releaaed Ceraluminum-body ASUS Zenbook, we found the laptop to be both incredibly light and durable, and able to withstand the rough and tumble of being in a commuter backpack.
