LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says 10 out-of-state college students were trapped by floodwaters in Bankhead National Forest Sunday morning.
At around 7 a.m., authorities said Lawrence County 911 received an emergency call about 10 out-of-state college students trapped by rising floodwaters while hiking in Bankhead National Forest.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Swift Water Rescue Team and Search and Rescue Team were sent to the rescue and due to the number of individuals involved, the Multi-Agency Search Team was also deployed.
Assisting agencies included the Lawrence County EMA, Morgan County Rescue Squad, Lawrence County Rescue Squad, Huntsville Cave Rescue, and Fisher Rescue Squad.
Rescue crews quickly found the trapped hikers and after assessing the scene, it was found that a water-based rescue was too dangerous due to heavy debris in the floodwaters.
Instead, rescue teams used rope rescue gear to get to them and were able to rescue all 10 people.
There were no injuries. Sheriff Max Sanders reminds the public to always check the weather forecast before going on a hike and to let someone know your plans and location ahead of time.
