Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment‘s bet on A Minecraft Movie has paid off. Following more than a decade in development, the film has kicked off with a stellar box office opening, raking in $58 million USD across North America from Friday and preview screenings. The film’s opening day is the largest in 2025, soaring past Captain America: Brave New World‘s $40.9 million USD opening. The Minecraft film marks the largest box office opening since Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

A Minecraft Movie is well on its way to surpassing estimates of $70 million to $80 million USD for the domestic opening weekend. The North American market has not seen a box office success like this since last November’s Moana 2. A Minecraft Movie is projected to beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which garnered $146 million USD, for the largest three-day opening for a video game film. Granted as the film hit $58 million USD before the weekend, things are looking up for the Jack Black and Jason Momoa-starring film.

The film had a $150 million USD production budget in addition to marketing and distribution costs. It earned a B+ rating on Cinema Score and would already rank as the second-highest-grossing domestic release of the year after just one weekend. Alongside Black and Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge also starred in the film. A Minecraft Movie tops the box office beating Disney’s Snow White which comes in fourth and Universal’s The Woman in the Yard in at fifth. Amazon MGM’s Jason Statham thriller A Working Man falls behind the Minecraft entry in second. It remains to be seen how successful A Minecraft Movie will be following the international numbers.
