NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The president has approved an emergency declaration for Tennessee amid the outbreak of tornadoes and severe storms that are sweeping through the state.

FEMA announced Thursday morning federal disaster assistance has been made available for the Volunteer State to supplement response efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding that began Wednesday, April 2.

President Donald Trump’s action authorizes FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts to alleviate the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on local populations and to provide appropriate assistance to save lives, to protect property, public health and safety and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe.

The declaration applies statewide, in all 95 counties, according to a news release from the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize and provide, at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency, DHS said. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, under the public assistance program, will be provided at 75% federal funding.
