Nick Frost could soon be the next Rubeus Hagrid in HBO‘s Harry Potter series adaptation.
Sources tell Variety that the British actor, known for his partnership with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, is currently “nearing a deal” to breathe new life into the Hogwarts groundskeeper. Neither HBO nor the Frost have confirmed the news, with the former stating, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation.”
“As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals,” HBO added, providing the same statement around the time John Lithgow was rumored to take on the role of Album Dumbledore. His casting has since been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Frost himself recently shared an exciting yet cryptic Instagram post, writing, “What a bloody lovely day! It’s happening, it’s actually happening. Stay cool.”
Hagrid is a gentle half-giant that not only serves as Hogwarts’ gamekeeper and groundskeeper, but later on as the Care of Magical Creatures professor. Following the death of Lily and James Potter, Hagrid was entrusted by Dumbledore with Harry as an infant, and is the one who breaks the new to Harry about his wizardly lineage on his 11th birthday. He was portrayed by Robbie Coltrane in the film series, who died in 2022.
