The ‘Mythic Quest’ Season 4 Finale Finally Went There And I Couldn’t Be Happier

Five years, four seasons, a pandemic, countless glances (and countless arguments), Mythic Quest finally did the damn thing.

**Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 finale of Mythic Quest**

I know there is some dark and dreery corner of the internet that is miserable over Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (Rob McElhenney) ending Season 4 with a passionate little makeout session, but it simply could not be me. Since day one, I have seen the incredible chemistry between these two actors and have known that while their characters have often cringed at the thought of getting together, they could get past the weirdness if they put their minds together… and their lips. Sorry, I had to go for that one.

Which is why Season 4 has undoubtedly been one of (if not) the best seasons the show has produced. Mythic Quest works best when Poppy and Ian are sympatico, achieving a kind of hive-mind mentality that would put even married couples of 50 years to shame. It’s part of the reason I love their dynamic so much and have actively been rooting all along to see the pair get together. For being the visionaries they are, the game makers are quite blind to what is right in front of them. So much so that it took Poppy almost moving across the world to be with her baby daddy, Storm (Chase Yi), just to figure it out. They aren’t meant to be apart from one another and they might be destined for more than just a business partnership.

Sue me, maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic, but I have always found their “finish each other’s sentences” and “you make me so mad because you know me best” relationship to be one step away from making them an A+ couple. In fact, watching Ian experience the deep pain of losing Poppy slowly to Storm and then to her pregnancy made for an added layer of emotion in an already charged season for the MQ co-leads. Their back-and-forth was hard to watch, if I’m being honest, because they are each other’s person.

The truth of the matter is that, like life, things don’t always work out the way people think, and given that Nicdao herself confirmed to Decider that this was never the plan, I think that just makes me love it more. Poppy and Ian may not have had this kiss if it wasn’t for her unplanned pregnancy with Storm, her nearly moving halfway around the world, and her, albeit briefly, trying to leave MQ. It’s what makes this moment feel right and not contrived, in my humble opinion as a TV person and just a massive Mythic Quest fan.

As for what is ahead, I’m not sure. Better yet, the way that Poppy and Ian stepped back from each other before the credits began to roll makes me think they are similarly in the dark about what comes next. And, to me, that is the most exciting part because it lays the groundwork for an incredible potential Season 5 storyline.

I guess what I’m trying to say is: Boo hoo, haters, it’s a good day for romance lovers and especially anyone fond of the “friends but also enemies but also business partners to lovers” genre. Wait, is that a trope? It should be.

Mythic Quest Season 4 is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
