The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing the contract to develop the F-47, a sixth-generation fighter jet set to serve as the centerpiece of its Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.

The announcement, made on Friday, marks a major step in replacing the F-22 Raptor and adapting to new global security challenges.

The F-47 is expected to be part of a broader “family of systems” designed to work together—combining manned jets, uncrewed aircraft and advanced digital infrastructure—to maintain air superiority in future conflicts.

What Is the F-47?

The F-47 is being developed as a sixth-generation fighter, a classification that reflects upgrades in stealth, speed, sensors and digital systems compared to today’s most advanced jets. The aircraft is expected to be capable of flying missions alongside autonomous drones, giving it added flexibility and reach in high-risk environments.

The NGAD program began in 2018 and entered a new phase with Boeing’s selection as the lead contractor. While most technical details remain classified, the Air Force has said the F-47 will deliver capabilities “beyond those of the F-22” and will be tailored to future threats.

How Much Does the F-47 Cost?

The Air Force has not released the cost of the F-47 or the total value of the development contract. However, the NGAD program is widely expected to be one of the most expensive aircraft efforts in U.S. history. For comparison, the F-22 cost about $150 million per unit (adjusted for inflation). The F-47’s cost could exceed that, but no official estimate has been provided so far.

What Has Trump Said About the F-47?

President Donald Trump publicly announced the F-47 at the White House this month. He described it as the “most advanced fighter jet in the world,” highlighting its speed, maneuverability and advanced capabilities. He also said the aircraft represented a clear demonstration of American military strength.

The designation “F-47” has drawn attention for potentially referencing Trump’s status as the 47th president, though the Air Force has not confirmed any connection.

How Does the F-47 Compare to the F-22?

The F-47 is being developed as the successor to the F-22 Raptor, the Air Force’s current top air superiority fighter. While many of the F-47’s features remain classified, officials have said it will include significant improvements over the F-22 in areas such as stealth, situational awareness, range and survivability.

One of the biggest differences is that the F-47 is set to be built to operate as part of a broader network of systems—including autonomous drones—rather than as a stand-alone aircraft. This approach is meant to give pilots more support, flexibility and real-time data in combat situations.

In short, the F-47 is expected to do what the F-22 was designed for—but with newer technology and better integration.
